There have been some dreadful images of orphanages over the years. Children being kept in the most squalid conditions; tied to beds; filthy and neglected. Does being poor mean that children are treated like this? It is a serious question. Do poor people treat their children in this way? Obviously those who love children would not treat them in this way. Regrettably, not every Director of an orphanage is a genuine and loving person. Many have found it a good way to encourage people to give money and aid which they subsequently sell. The worse the children look, the more aid they receive. We spend a great deal of time conducting research and looking at ways we can help best. There are many orphanages in Eastern Europe and Moldova is no exception. There are good orphanages and bad orphanages. There are many kind, hard working and generous people who send aid blindly to orphanages in Eastern Europe because they see how dreadful the children are. Most of this aid could easily be sold, making the Directors and others wealthy. With the research we do we try and ensure that the aid is used to benefit the children.
One of the main problems for a child in an orphanage is the time they reach the age they have to leave the orphanage. Where do they go? Do they go out of the gate and turn left or should they turn right? Many may end up in an asylum as there is nowhere else to go. |
Orphanages
Together with the church members I began a project to help children from socially vulnerable families from our village. Approximately 20-25 children from such families get daily a warm lunch at the church.
church we have seen the results of the beatings on the girls’ backs. Because the parents drink all the money they do not have on what to buy food. That’s why the girls the majority of times eat just once a day at the church. And often they go to sleep hungry. Also because the parents drink they buy them no clothes and no shoes. There are various orphanages we support where the children are not tied to beds and not kept in filthy conditions. The facilities they have are the absolute bare minimum, however, the children are cared for and are loved. The aid that we provide such orphanages improves their situation and we consistently monitor the effect that our support is having.
