Welcome to the Christian Response website.  The object of this site is to provide you with useful information about our work in the hope that it will help you understand what we do and why we do it.

A very brief history. The roots of Christian Response go back to 1990.  You may well remember the hideous images of the orphanages in Romania.  It was in 1990 that Gary Taverner had a vision to help in these orphanages and from there everything snowballed.

Over the years, the situation in Romania improved therefore we began to expand activities. Missions were made to Albania and some of the areas devastated by the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl.  Whilst working in Romania we were to hear reports about the neighbouring country of Moldova and how appalling levels of poverty abound there. One fleeting visit and Moldova was taken into our hearts.

Whilst maintaining our interest in Romania by far the majority of effort is now concentrated on the country of Moldova. It is Europe’s poorest country and the situation out there is really dreadful. You can read more about this under the section headed “Moldova, the country”.

All who work for the charity “Christian Response” are volunteers, no-one is paid. We have no offices or other rented premises.  We borrow all we can, rather than renting or hiring, all this means the money saved can be spent on those we seek to help in Eastern Europe.

If you are interested in our work please read some of the past newsletters and look at all the other information you can find on this website, the tabs for which are on the left.

Soup Kitchens Print E-mail
Children are extremely vulnerable. Some may be kidnapped and sent to other countries and used in the sex industry in the West. The older ones could be kidnapped for a donor of body parts, after all, a healthy teenager will have two kidneys, a heart, lungs etc. A valuable commodity to the West.

It is not easy to survive on the streets of Europe's poorest country. Finding food from the dustbins is almost impossible. Many children will live in the sewers, by hot water pipes or under the blocks of flats. Some say not so bad in the summer but in winter when temperatures can plummet to minus 30 degrees it is difficult.

Our soup kitchen projects are very successful and provide a valuable service/refuge for many children. The problem is that although we can care for them whilst they are with us we then have to return them to the streets until the next time they attend the soup kitchen.

As an expansion of this programme we sponsor and run an orphanage where children can stay. Wherever possible we try and arrange for the children to be registered, a lot of the children were not registered at birth and therefore officially do not exist so do not have a need for education, medical facilities etc. If we can get the papers and officially register them then we can enter them for schooling etc.

The orphanage is a wonderful place and helps so many children. It is our intention to expand the orphanage programme to help even more children in various areas of Moldova.

There are many families who are too poor to look after their children and other children who are orphans or for a variety of reasons have to survive by themselves on the streets of Moldova. These are extremely vulnerable and life is particularly hard. We run various soup kitchens where we can encourage vulnerable children to come not only to obtain nourishing food but also we endeavour to give them access to medical expertise, education etc.

All this costs a great deal of money. Unfortunately we cannot help all the children we would like to. Some are turned away.

If you feel you would like to help a vulnerable child and wish to help why not sponsor a child on a regular basis to attend one of our soup kitchens.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SPONSOR A CHILD OR HELP WITH THE COSTS OF SOUP KITCHENS OR ORPHANAGES, PLEASE DOWNLOAD, COMPLETE AND RETURN TO US A STANDING ORDER FORM. and if a taxpayer, a Gift Aid Form.

In addition we also support other orphanages, providing money, food, clothing, school supplies, computers etc.
